What a head spa includes
A full head spa in a Seoul salon is a sixty to ninety minute sequence: a scalp scan with a small camera to show oil, flakes and follicle condition, a cleansing or exfoliating step, a long massage with pressure points along the neck and shoulders, a steam or warm towel phase, a treatment mask chosen for your scalp type, and a careful blow dry. The massage is the part people come back for. The scan is the part that tells you whether you needed it.

Head spa, scalp treatment, hair clinic: not the same thing
Menus use three words. A head spa is the relaxation-forward version above. A scalp treatment or “scalp care” is shorter and more clinical, aimed at oil, dandruff or thinning, often sold in a course of several visits. A hair clinic or “hair treatment” is for the hair shaft, not the scalp: protein, keratin or bonding treatments for damaged or bleached hair, sometimes added before a perm or color. Decide which problem you are solving before you book, because the prices and the time differ.
Who gets the most out of it
People with an oily or itchy scalp, people who color often, anyone jet lagged, and anyone about to have a perm or color who wants the hair in the best possible condition first. Hair clinics before a perm are one of the few upsells that are often worth saying yes to on damaged hair. If your scalp and hair are healthy, a head spa is a pleasant hour and that is a fine reason on holiday, but do not expect a visible change.

What it cost in 2026
Guides and booking listings in 2026 put franchise head spas at about ₩50,000 to ₩70,000, premium Gangnam and Cheongdam sessions at ₩120,000 to ₩200,000, and long stem-cell or fifteen-step programs at ₩200,000 to ₩250,000. Scalp care added to a cut or color and hair clinics before a chemical service are priced lower and vary by salon. Some Gangnam salons package a head spa with a cut for international visitors. As with everything on this site, get a quote for your service rather than trusting a list.
A head spa, step by step
You are taken to a reclining shampoo chair, often in a separate quiet room, with a blanket and a warm towel over your eyes. The therapist, who is usually a stylist trained in scalp care, parts your dry hair and runs a small camera over several areas, showing you the magnified image on a screen: oil around follicles, flakes, redness, and the number of hairs per follicle, which hints at thinning. Then a cleansing oil or scrub is massaged into the scalp for several minutes to lift build-up, followed by the first wash.
The massage that follows is the heart of the service: slow pressure along the hairline, the crown and the base of the skull, usually extending to the neck and shoulders. Steam or a warm wrap opens things up, a mask chosen for your scalp type sits for ten minutes, and a second rinse and a careful blow dry finish it. Expect to feel slightly dazed afterward, in a good way.
Oily scalp, flakes, thinning: what Seoul salons can and cannot do
For an oily or flaky scalp, a course of scalp treatments does help, mostly by removing build-up and teaching you a better washing routine; the camera before and after makes the difference visible. For thinning, be realistic. A salon scalp treatment improves the environment and can make hair look fuller, but it is not a medical treatment and no honest therapist will promise regrowth. If a salon claims to cure hair loss, treat it the way you would treat a shampoo that claims to.
Korea does have excellent dermatology clinics for hair loss, and a salon therapist who notices real thinning will often say so and suggest one. That honesty is a mark of a good salon.
Dedicated head spa studios versus salons
Seoul now has studios that do only head spas, often in a Japanese-influenced style with private rooms, longer massages and prices at the upper end of the range. They are the better choice if relaxation is the whole point and you are not having hair done. Salon head spas are the better choice before a perm or color, because the same team handles the hair afterward and can choose a treatment that prepares it. Either way, book ahead; head spas are popular with locals and weekend slots go first.
How to book it and who to ask for
In our catalog Tei at Juno Hair Apgujeong lists head spa and scalp care alongside perms and color, and lists English on a public profile. Kelly in Myeongdong and Sun also offer care services. Tell the stylist whether you want relaxation, a scalp problem solved or hair repair before a chemical service; the word you use decides the service. Our team can check what the salon includes and the quote before you commit. Browse stylists who list care services.
